Scottish
National - Loch Ken, 21st September 2008. See HERE for
details.
Club
member Eric Morriss wins the firt Ayrstrike qualifier at
Springwater Fishery, Ayr.
Club member Ewan Weed wins the second Ayrstrike qualifier held at Broom Fishery,
Annan.
Club member Mike Shaw sets a new 3 hour match record on Carlisle water Crofton
Lake. Mike landed 46lb 15oz of Bream, Skimmers, Carp, Tench
and Roach to pole fished Pellet.
The
fourth and final league match of the summer 2008 series
was to be held at Magiscroft once more. Going into this
match there were 5 or 6 anglers in with a shout of winning
the league indvidually, whilst the team league looked to
be sewn up by the Monklands A team, but they knew that
Magiscroft would be going all out to beat them on their
own water.
As well as all the excitement at the top of the table, there was much much more
at stake for the mighty All Stars. We were 5 points behind
the Monklands B team - could the All Stars acheive the
impossible and actually finish higher than the B team?
The Monklands teams for this round were:
Monklands A
Ian Whitson
Darrin Ferguson
Stephen McAveny
Ewan Weed
Monklands B
Richie
Vernon (standing in for Davie McAuley)
Simon Murray
Alec Napier
Dougie Garmoury
Monklands All Stars
Michael Neary
Mike Shaw
David Anderson
Bryan Hewitt
With the draw completed in record time (9 minutes acording to Mike Weed) the
anglers were off to their pegs. Stephen McCaveny was drawn
on the far bank in the widest part of the Loch which is
normally good for Carp on the Pellet Waggler, however,
he had Magiscroft's Chris Paton on the next peg. Ian Whitson
was drawn on the opposite end of the Loch in the narrow
section, Ewan Weed was on permanent peg 16 whilst Darrin
was pegged on the Island Pond. Overall it looked like Monklands
A had a reasonable draw and would take the league winners
title.
Individually it could still be any one of the 5 or 6 anglers that were there
or thereabouts.
At the end of the match news started to filter through that Monklands member
Darrin had finished 3rd in his section and this was enough
to win the league with 52 points with 4 anglers
finishing on 50 points:
Teamwise, Monklands A had a section winner with Stephen McCaveny, two third in
sections from Ewan Weed and Darrin Ferguson and a 7th in
section from Ian Whitson - this was enough for second on
the day and overall summer league champions:
I drew peg B2, which was on the far bank almost opposite to the Cafe. I had no
idea whether this was a decent peg or not, but there were
plenty of fish showing prior to the hooter so I was confident
of a few bites. I setup a Drennan Crystal waggler for the
Carp up in the water, I also setup two shallow rigs, one
paste rig and one on the deck rig. I was fully intending
to fish up in the water most of the day.
At the hooter I fed my deck line and went out on the Pellet Waggler, I also started
to feed my shallow line at 14m. After 30 minutes of the
match I had one Carp in the net caught on the Pellet Waggler,
I spent another 20 minutes or so on this with no more indications.
I then went onto the shallow pole line, cupping in worm and loose feeding caster
I was soon catching small Perch, Roach and Skimmers, problem
was they were very small and I needed some Carp or bigger
skimmers to build a weight. Alternating between my three
lines I was struggling to put together any number of fish
(but then so was everyone else!), I spent the last hour
of the match trying for a Carp on the Paste, Pellet Waggler
and worm up in the water - it wasn't to be but I did pickup
a few tips watching other anglers who did connect with
Carp in the last hour.
